Are host families paid?

Host families are not paid. According the United States Department of State, host families cannot receive financial gain from their participation in a student exchange program. This rule is designed to ensure that host families are participating in the program for the right reasons. However, in recognition of their role as citizen ambassadors, all host families are eligible to receive a charitable tax deduction on their tax return.

How expensive is it to host a student?

Your financial responsibility is quite minimal and mainly consists of room and board for your student. Your student's natural parents will pay for travel to the United States, school and program fees. The student will have a bank account with BBVA Compass Bank to which the natural parent will provide your student with a monthly spending allowance used for school expenses (like school lunch), social activities, clothing, cell phone bills and other essentials.

What do CYE students bring money for?

CYE students have their own pocket money, provided by their natural families. The students will take care of their own cell phone bills, school lunches and other school expenses, personal expenses and recreation such as movies and bowling. CYE Students have a checking account with BBVA Compass Bank and a debit card for access to cash as needed.
